A guide to different computers in the Library
In the libraries, different types of computer are available:
Sunrays
Acer PCs
HP PCs
Dell PCs
Collaborative PCs
SunRays:
- Purple computers that provide Web access to the Library catalogue and Library resources only.
- No logon is required.
- Located on all of the floors of all of the libraries.
- These computers cannot be used for general web browsing or to open Microsoft Word files etc.

Acers:
- Groups of Blue and White computers that provide a full set of office applications (including Word, Excel etc), Internet access, laser printing as well as Library applications.
- FAN logon is required.
- Located on all of the floors of all of the libraries .
- Each Acer has a Floppy disk drive and USB ports on the front, hard disk space is not permanent.
- Microsoft Word is the word processing application available on Library computers, and files need to be in a compatible format for you to open and edit them.

HPs (Hewlett Packard Computers):
- Groups of Silver and Black computers that provide a full set of office applications (including Word, Excel etc), Internet access, laser printing as well as Library applications.
- FAN logon is required.
- Located on all of the floors of all of the libraries.
- Each HP has a Floppy disk drive and USB ports on the front, hard disk space is not permanent.
- Microsoft Word is the word processing application available on Library computers, and files need to be in a compatible format for you to open and edit them
Please note that documents saved in Microsoft Works (wps) format cannot be opened in Word. If you are using Microsoft Works to compose or edit your file and need to edit the file in Word later on, save the file in rich text format (rtf).

Dell Computers:
- Groups of Black and Grey computers that provide a full set of office applications (including Word, Excel etc), Internet access, laser printing as well as Library applications.
- FAN logon is required.
- Located in the Central Library computer labs and in the Medical and Sturt Libraries.
- Each Dell has 2 USB ports on the front, hard disk space is not permanent.
- Each computer has a DVD drive.
- Microsoft Word is the word processing application available on Library computers, and files need to be in a compatible format for you to open and edit them
Please note that documents saved in Microsoft Works (wps) format cannot be opened in Word. If you are using Microsoft Works to compose or edit your file and need to edit the file in Word later on, save the file in rich text format (rtf).

Collaborative Workstations:

- Computers intended for groups of up to 5 people. They all include a full set of office applications (including Word, Excel etc), Internet access, laser printing as well as Library applications.
- Some also include a large widescreen monitor with a multi-region DVD player/Video player and memory card facilites (Compact flash, SD, Memory Stick, SM and MMC compatible)
Locations:
- Central Library on levels 1,2 and 3 (The collaborative workstation on level 2 must be booked at the loans counter)
- Medical Library
- Sturt Library on level 3
- Each workstation has USB ports, and hard disk space which is not permanent.
- Microsoft Word is the word processing application available on Library computers, and files need to be in a compatible format for you to open and edit them
