Collections

Welcome to the Gus Fraenkel Medical Library's print collections. These are located in the Gus Fraenkel Medical Library on level 5E of the Flinders Medical Centre. Details of individual titles may be accessed through the Voyager Information System.

The major collections in the Medical Library are:

Book Collection

Books are shelved in Dewey call number order on the western side of the Gus Fraenkel Medical Library. Many books are available for 4 week loan. Shorter loan periods of 1 day, 3 days or 7 days are indicated by a sticker on the spine of the book. Pamphlets, Folio Pamphlets and Folios (indicated by a p, fp or f in front of the call number) are interfiled within the Book Collection.

Periodicals Collection

The Periodicals Collection is located on the eastern side of the Gus Fraenkel Medical Library. It include journals, annual reports and some government publications. The periodicals are arranged in Dewey order. The latest issue of each periodical is displayed on shelving adjacent to the Reference Collection. The display is arranged alphabetically by title. Periodicals are available for one hour loan.

Tests Collection

This Collection is located behind the Circulation Counter adjacent to Readings. It contains tests for use by Speech Pathology students. The loan period is usually 3 days. These tests may be booked - please ask at the Circulation Counter.

Reference Collection

The Reference Collection is located behind the AV Collection on the low wooden shelves in front of the Circulation Counter. It includes indexes to journal literature, reference books, bibliographies, dictionaries, encyclopaedias, atlases and university calendars. These books are not available for loan.

Audiovisual Collection

The Medical Library has a range of audiovisual materials available for loan. The AV collection is located on the wooden shelves in front of the Circulation Counter. Most items are available for 7 day loan but items in high demand may be available for 1 day or 3 day loan. The collection also contains lecture videos, CD's and DVD's shelved by Topic Code. DVD/CD players and video players are located in the Discussion Rooms.

Readings

High demand materials, such as items from required reading lists are placed in the Reserve Collection located behind the Circulation Desk. Locate the call numbers on the Voyager Information System and request the item at the Circulation Counter to borrow from Reserve. Reserve materials are available for two hour loan only and are restricted for use within the Library. They may be available for overnight within two hours of the library closing time.

Theses

The theses of Flinders postgraduates and some Honours students are kept in the Special Collections in the Central Library. Second copies of many theses from the School of Medicine are kept in the Thesis Collection in the Medical Library. These may be available for loan. If you would like to consult a particular thesis, please ask at the Information Desk.

New Books

New books added to the collection are displayed for one week in the new book display area opposite the Circulation Counter.
