Evidence Based Medicine sources in Haynes 4S order

( Haynes RB: Of studies, syntheses, synopses, and systems: the "4S" evolution of services for finding current best evidence. ACP J Club 2001;134:A11-A13)

Systems

Clinical Evidence

Integrates evidence about prevention and therapy for a broad array of clinical problems. Has an explicit review process.

Synopses

When no evidence-based information system exists for a clinical problem, then synopses of individual studies and reviews are the next best source. They provide a quick summary, with enough information to make a clinical decision.

ACP Journal Club

The ACP Journal Club Collection consists of two journals: ACP Journal Club and Evidence-Based Medicine. Its general purpose is to select published articles according to explicit criteria and that discuss important advances in the treatment, diagnosis, cause, prevention and prognosis of medical disorders. Clinical experts then summarise the articles, and comment on methodology, preceding research and recommendations for clinical practice in 'value-added' abstracts.

Bandolier

Bandolier is a journal about health care, using evidence-based medicine techniques to provide advice about particular treatments or diseases for healthcare professionals and consumers.

DARE

DARE (Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects) see Cochrane Library or search the original DARE database separately via the NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination. DARE provides access to systematic reviews on the effectiveness of clinical interventions & policies from databases such as MEDLINE & through manual review of primary literature

NHS EED (NHS Economic Evaluation Database)

A register of published economic evaluations of health care interventions. Economic evaluation records include a structured summary and a qualitative assessment together with details of any practical implications for the NHS

TRIP

The TRIP Database searches over 75 sites of high-quality medical information. It provides over 29,000 links to EBM based material on the web as well as articles from on-line journals such as the BMJ, JAMA, NEJM., ACJ Journal Club, Evidence-Based Medicine

Syntheses

If more detail is needed or no synopsis is available, then look for syntheses that summarize what is known about a topic. Syntheses are based on rigorous searches for evidence, explicit scientific reviews of the studies uncovered in the search, and systematic assembly of the evidence to provide as clear a signal about the effects of a health care intervention as the evidence will allow.

Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews

The full text of the regularly updated systematic reviews of topics prepared by the Cochrane Collaboration. The reviews are presented as either complete reviews or protocols for reviews currently being prepared. The reviews aim to guide searchers of the data-base to the results of research quickly and assess the validity, applicability and implications of the results. In contrast to ACP Journal Club, it looks at a series of studies on a topic, rather than review the value of a single piece of research or study.

Medline

The "Clinical Queries" limits in Ovid Medline allows you to limit to Clinical Studies which discuss Therapy, Diagnosis, Etiology, Prognosis , Reviews, Clinical Prediction Guides, Qualitative Studies, Costs, and Economics. You can use the additional Filters

Sensitivity: includes most relevant articles, with some less relevant ones. Broader search.

Specificity: includes most relevant articles, omits some less relevant ones. Narrower search.

National Guideline Clearinghouse

A comprehensive searchable collection of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and related documents.

Studies

If there are no systems, synopses or syntheses available then you need to search for original studies. Some sources are:

Cochrane Controlled Trials Register

CCTR is a bibliographic database of definitive controlled trials. It contains over 300,000 bibliographic references to controlled trials in health care.
