Collections

The Sturt Library has a collection of materials principally to support the teaching and research needs of the staff and students in the School of Education, School of Special Education and Disability Studies, and the School of Nursing & Midwifery, all based at Sturt. The Library collection is divided in a number of ways.
The major collections in the Sturt Library are:

Main Book Collection

This collection is located on Level 2 and embraces the bulk of the Library's holdings. Books are available for loan for various periods.

Periodicals Collection

The periodicals collections is located on Level 3 and consists of publications of various kinds issued serially, that is, in successive parts over a period of time and generally intended to be continued indefinitely. These include journals, annual reports and some government publications. A display of the most recent issues is maintained on Level 3 adjacent to the Photocopying Room and the stairwell.

Teaching Resources Collection

A collection of materials for use in conjunction with teaching practice is available for loan in the TRC on Level 3. It is a collection of practical resources intended primarily to assist Education Studies students during their course. It consists of materials to help students prepare lessons, and materials to take out to classrooms, during teaching practicum. The age range of resources is from pre-school to secondary.

The book resources consists of curriculum guides, school textbooks, picture books, big books, children's novels. Non-book materials include slide sets, picture kits, multimedia kits, posters, musical instruments, games. Videos that are part of a TRC kit are kept in the Audiovisual Collection.

Except for the posters, the resources in different formats are interfiled, so that any information on a subject is shelved together.

Reference Collection

The Reference Collection is located on Level 3 and includes indexes to journal literature, reference books, bibliographies, dictionaries, encyclopaedias, atlases and university calendars, amongst other things. These books are not available for loan.

Audiovisual Collection

Sturt Library has a range of audiovisual materials and equipment available for loan by staff and students. Videos, audiocassettes and video players for viewing videos are housed in the AV Room at the rear of level 3. You will also find a microfiche reader/printer in this room. All audiovisual materials can be booked for future use or loaned by taking them to the Circulation Desk. Equipment such as tape recorders, slide projectors and a camcorder are also available for bookings and for loan. Please direct all enquiries about equipment to the Circulation Desk.

Readings

Heavily used material is placed in Readings at the Circulation Desk. Locate the call numbers on the Voyager Information System before borrowing from Readings. Most Readings materials are available for two hour loan only and are restricted for use within the Library.

Theses

The theses of Flinders postgraduates and some Honours students are kept in the Special Collections in the Central Library. Some copies may be held in the Sturt Library, and are available for loan, while others have more restricted access. If you would like to consult a particular thesis, please ask at the Information Desk.

New Books

New books added to the collection are displayed for one week in the new book display area near the Photocopying Room on Level 3. These books may be reserved by readers and collected after the period of display is completed. For more detail about the location of collections, please see staff at the Information Desk.
