CollectionsThe Library collection is divided in a number of ways to differentiate between varying access levels, physical size and special storage requirements. Here is a brief outline of the major collections in the Central Library.
FoliosFolios are slightly oversize materials that will not sit comfortably on standard size shelves. These are found, again, near the beginning of the book rows. They are indicated on Investigator by the call number prefixed with an "f".
Folio PamphletsThese are oversize pamphlets, again kept in boxes with the call number range shown on the outside. They are indicated on Investigator by the call number prefixed with "fp".
Elephant FoliosElephant folios are bigger that normal folios and must be stored on special shelving. Again, these are found near the beginning of the book rows.
Main Book CollectionThis collection embraces the bulk of the Library's holdings and is readily accessible to all staff and students. The books from the main book collection are available for use throughout the building and for loan.
Microform CollectionPeriodicals, newspapers, theses and other publications may be received in microform/microfiche. The Multimedia Unit on the entry level holds these materials, as well as the equipment to read and copy pages. (The copying machines accept the photocopying cards.)
New BooksNew books added to the collection are displayed for one week in the new book display area near the entrance to the Library. These books may be reserved by readers and collected after the period of display is completed.
Newspaper CollectionMany newspapers are found in the microform collection, but up to date copies, or those not yet on microform, are found on Level 1.
PamphletsPamphlets are stored in boxes to ensure they are not damaged or lost. These boxes, labelled by call number, are shelved at the beginning of the book rows. They are indicated on the Voyager Information System by the call number prefixed with a "p".
Periodicals CollectionThe periodicals collection consists of publications of various kinds issued serially, that is, in successive parts over a period of time and generally intended to be continued indefinitely. These include journals, annual reports and some government publications.A display of the most recent issues is maintained in a separate reading room behind the Lending Services and Reserve counters. The rest of the collection is found throughout the Library according to call number.
Reference CollectionThe Reference Collection is located at the western end of Level 1 and includes indexes to journal literature, reference books, bibliographies, dictionaries, encyclopaedias, atlases and university calendars, amongst other things. These books are not available for loan.
