Australian sites

* AusEinet: The Australian Early Intervention Network for Mental Health in Young People
A joint programme of Flinders University and Adelaide University funded under the National Mental Health Strategy, this site looks at early intervention issues in mental health. It includes a news and hot topics section, a Clearinghouse, comprehensive links and information on Conferences and current programmes for early intervention.

* Australian & New Zealand College of Mental Health Nurses
The website of the professional body in Australia & New Zealand for practising mental health nurses. Includes e-lists, fulltext publications, information on conferences and links to mental health sites.

* Beyondblue: the national depression initiative
An initiative of the Commonwealth Government of Australia and the State of Victoria which aims to increase community awareness of depression. This website provides a vast amount of information on the disease and includes scales for measuring depressive symptoms. A section for health professionals gives access to research reports, critical appraisals of scientific studies and links to important organisations.

* Black Dog Institute
Attached to Prince of Wales Hospital and affiliated with Univ.of NSW, Educational, research in mood disorders.

* Clinical Research Unit for Anxiety and Depression
University of NSW and St. Vincents Hospital. Excellent site with lots of infromation and research links.
 
* Drug and Alcohol Services South Australia
This agency is part of the Department of Human Services in South Australia. Provides links to current research, statistics. Has its own searchable online library. Links to courses, workshops and evidence-based practice treatment guidelines.

* Mental health and psychiatry internet resources
This is a comprehensive resource for linking to quality mental health sites on the internet. It lists mental health bibliographies, directories and full text sources such as reports, legislation and guidelines, with a particular emphasis on South Australian resources. Produced by Maureen Bell, Research Librarian at the Barr Smith Library, Adelaide University.

* Mental health and wellbeing. Commonwealth Department of Health and Aging
This site details Australia's National Mental Health Strategy and the National Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy. It also provides information about mental illness, lists relevant publications and has a directory of Mental Health Crisis and Support Services.

* Mental Health Council of Australia
TPeak national, non government organisation representing and promoting interests of Australian Mental health sector established in 1997.

* National health survey. Mental health, Australia, 2003
This publication presents mental health information collected in the National Health Survey (NHS) which was conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) from February to November 2001 (see Explanatory Notes). The survey was designed to obtain national benchmarks on a wide range of health issues, and to enable the monitoring of changes in health over time.

* Primary Mental Health Care Australian Resource Centre - PARC
A Clearinghouse and electronic library for primary mental health care resources. Consists of a searchable database, downloadable fulltext documents and a comprehensive list of web links to sources of full text documents and sites of relevance to mental health.

* Multicultural Mental Health Australia
Multicultural Mental Health Australia (MMHA) provides national leadership in mental health and suicide prevention for Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds. Links to leading agencies in multicultural health. Includes a comprehensive list of Australian links, including full-text documents.

* SANE Australia
An Australian organisation supporting education and research in the area of mental health. This excellent site has factsheets, information about resources, extensive links to important mental health sites and writings by people affected by mental illness.

* Headroom: partnership with young people project
A project headed by the Women's & Children's Hospital, Division of Mental Health. The project's website provides mental health information for adolescents on issues such as body image, drugs and peer pressure. It also contains relevant information for health professionals and carers.

* Transcultural Mental Health Centre, NSW
A member of Diversity Health Institute. A collection of full-text resources for NESB about mental health. Includes mental health information brochures in many languages.
 

International sites

* American Psychiatric Nurses Association - APNA
APNA is a non-profit organization and "is the largest psychiatric-mental health nursing membership organization" in the US. The site ncludes full-text position papers and extensive informational links to other mental health nursing sites.

* Centre for Evidence Based Mental Health
A site produced by Oxford University's Department of Psychiatry. Contains links to fulltext articles on Evidence Based mental health, an online journal, a glossary, tools for critical appraisal and links to other relevant sites.

* Drogo Research.com -International Journal of Psychiatric Nursing Research
A UK site provides access to journal abstracts as well as feature articles in "News and views from around the world" and a carers and student section.

* International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses - ISPN
"Their mission is to "unite and strengthen the presence and the voice of specialty psychiatric-mental health nursing while influencing health care policy to promote equitable, evidence-based and effective treatment and care for individuals, families and communities." Includes full-text position papers on prescribing psychotopics, rights of children, restraint & seclusion, alcohol withdrawal etc. along with links to important psychiatric journals.

* Internet Mental Health
Describes itself as "a free encyclopedia of mental health information". Click on Disorders for the 52 most common mental disorders and their diagnosis, description and treatment. Click on Medications and find the 67 most common psychiatric drugs and their indications, contraindications, dosage etc. as well as research findings.

* Mental Health Net - MHN
An award-winning guide to mental and behavioural healthcare providing a current news service, articles, information on disorders and their treatments, a glossary of mental health terms and many other professional resources.


* National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors
The National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD) organizes to reflect and advocate for the collective interests of State Mental Health Authorities and their directors at the national level. NASMHPD conducts environmental scans in the delivery and financing of mental health services and builds and disseminates knowledge and experience reflecting the integration of public mental health programming in evolving healthcare environments

* National Electronic Library for Mental Health - NeLMH
A site created and maintained by the Centre for Evidence Based Mental Health, Oxford, UK. Divided into topics in mental health (eg. suicide, depression etc.) and then into either basic content (for consumers) or healthcare professional content. The professional content includes sections on diagnosis, treatment, epidemiology, health care provision and current research.

* National Institute of Mental Health - NIMH
This site has excellent information on mental health for the public, practitioners and researchers. It looks at clinical trials and current research and provides factsheets and statistics.

* Mental Health America - MHA
Addresses all aspects of mental health and mental illness through advocacy, education, research and service. Includes fact and free electronic publications.
