Information Literacy
What is information literacy?
Information literacy is the ability to find and use information effectively.
In the university context, it includes knowing how to use
library resources necessary for coursework and being able to gather and
analyse information
for research purposes. In the workplace and in daily life,
well-developed information skills continue to be invaluable.
Flinders Library takes an active role in teaching information skills and in assisting staff and students to use both traditional and electronic information resources. Its information literacy program includes:
- Guided tours
- - concentrated at the beginning of the first and second semesters.
- Information Desks
- - located in the Central Library and each Branch Library. Provide general assistance in using the library and reference service.
- Liaison librarians
- - provide subject-specific assistance, tutorials and workshops, for printed reference resources and electronic resources.
- En-route Online Tutorials
- - tutorials on the library's most popular databases.
- Publications and brochures
- - guides to each library plus help sheets for the most popular databases
and CD ROMs.
- How to guides
- Study Skills brochures
- Library assignment
- - many first level students are required to complete and pass an online library assignment, in first semester.
