Copyright and Publication
- What kinds of materials are appropriate for placing in the archive?
- Examples of appropriate content include statistical datasets, working papers, technical reports, and other scholarship not usually submitted for peer-reviewed publications, as well as previously published material if the publisher permits.
- Who owns copyright to an item deposited in the Flinders Academic Commons?
- Authors retain copyright for all items in the FAC. Contributors click on a license agreement that signifies that they own the copyright and have the right to deposit the item and that grants to Flinders University a LIMITED, NON-EXCLUSIVE LICENSE to disseminate the item through the repository and to migrate the item (i.e., back it up or copy it) for preservation purposes.
- May I deposit copies of published articles?
- Yes, but your copyright transfer form must allow you to do so, or the publisher must grant permission:
--> For works that you have already published:
- Check the copyright transfer form that you signed when the article was accepted. If you transferred "exclusive" or "all" rights to the publisher you may need to request the publisher's permission before posting it in the Flinders Academic Commons.
- Check the SHERPA/RoMEO listing for your publisher at http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo.php . RoMEO outlines the copyright and repository policies for over 90 publishers and 7,000 scholarly journals. Note that there may be special instructions or restrictions that limit your posting to the refereed manuscript or require a specific kind of citation.
- If you need help interpreting a copyright agreement or publisher's instructions, contact Katie.Cavanagh@flinders.edu.au and she will get back to you!
- How do I change a copyright form?
- The original contract may read:
"The author transfers exclusively to the publisher copyright (including all rights thereunder) in the work for the duration of copyright and all extensions and renewals thereof, in all languages, throughout the world, and in any form or medium now known or hereafter developed."
Add the following language to your contract:
"Notwithstanding the above language, I reserve the right to use this work in my teaching and research, for my colleagues at Flinders University to use this work in their teaching and research, and I also reserve the right to place an electronic copy of this work on a publicly accessible web site."
- I have a large number of previously published articles that I wish to contribute. Can you help?
- Yes. In some cases we may be able to assist with scanning offprints into PDF, or helping your archive your born-digital work.
